What was East Quogue called before?
The hamlet now called East Quogue has carried three names since its founding, and each one tells a story about what the community thought it was. It was originally settled as Fourth Neck in 1673 -- a geographic description, nothing more. By 1852, the residents had reimagined themselves as Atlanticville, a name that gestured toward the ocean with a certain nineteenth-century ambition. In 1891, the hamlet settled on East Quogue, aligning itself with its neighbor to the west. Through all of those renames, the essential character of the place remained unchanged: a small waterfront community in the Town of Southampton where the founding families -- Carter, Downs, Phillips, Jackson, Foster, Howell, Reeve, Squires -- set a tone of quiet self-sufficiency that persists today.
That continuity is East Quogue's defining quality. The hamlet has not been reinvented by outside capital or reshaped by development pressure. It has simply continued, adjusting its name while keeping its identity intact.
Shinnecock Bay and the Working Waterfront
